We use a short list of materials, chosen because they are pleasant to live with and honest about how they age. Here is what each one is, why we use it, and how to look after it.
Linen
Stonewashed linen is soft from the first day and softer with every wash. It breathes well, so beds stay comfortable in warm rooms. It creases, and that is part of its character rather than a flaw. Wash it cool and let it dry naturally where you can.
Wool
Felted and woven wool is warm, springy and good at shrugging off everyday dirt. New wool can shed a little at first. Air it often, spot-clean where possible, and wash it only when it really needs it, cool and gently.
Oak and beech
Our wooden pieces are oiled rather than lacquered, so the grain stays visible and the surface can be refreshed. Wipe with a damp cloth, and re-oil when the wood starts to look dry.
Stoneware
Stoneware is dense and pleasantly heavy, so a bowl stays put at dinner time. We glaze the inside and often leave the clay foot bare. It is sturdy, but it can chip if it is dropped on a hard floor.
Waxed canvas and leather
Waxed canvas copes with light rain and softens into creases over time. Leather darkens and takes on a patina as it is handled. Both can be refreshed: canvas with a new coat of wax, leather with a little balm.
Small batches
We make things in short runs. It means some pieces sell out and take a while to come back, but it also means each batch can be a little better than the last.
